India's Electoral Journey
Tracing India's Electoral Shifts Through Pivotal Moments
In the world's largest democracy, every five years, over 900 million eligible voters have the power to reshape the nation's future. India's general elections are more than just a numbers game—they're a reflection of the country's ever-evolving story.
As I write this today, India is eagerly awaiting the outcome of the 2024 General elections. At this point, it's interesting to take a look at how India has voted in the past and reflect on the its electoral journey.
But, let us look at this numbers game through a unique lens: a data visualization that doesn't just display election results, it intertwines them with the landmark events that could have shaped each outcome from 1952 to 2019.
Each election result is presented not in isolation, but as a product of its time—a response to the mistakes, losses, succeses and stories that captivated the nation.
Through pixels and numbers, we'll trace how India has voted through its history and what have been the events that have guided those results.
First there is a big picture one page narrative which needs a lot of zooming to get to all the details :-)
There are shorter versions which help visualize it better.
